IUDE Fall 2024 Concert: Colors of Hope
Director’s Notes
Welcome to Iona University Dance Ensemble’s Fall 2024 season at the Murphy Auditorium! We are delighted that you are joining us to celebrate the virtuosity, versatility, and professionalism of the ensemble members who have dedicated themselves to this production over the past few months. We are thrilled to present works by faculty and student choreographers under the theme “Colors of Hope.” For this semester’s production, the dancers embodied hope that ranges from personal to communal to global, that can inspire us to understand ourselves better, become a more engaged citizen, develop our imagination and our identity, and translate our embodied critical inquiry into advocacy.
Our main ensemble repertories include a dance choreographed by me in collaboration with the dancers that explores environmental sustainability, a jazz dance about cell phone use and how it affects our health and how we see the world, a hip hop piece that explores party, street and club dances rooted in black and brown culture in NYC, and a Butoh based piece with multifaceted reflections of existence. We also showcase solos and duets that celebrate hope for each other and the world.
We congratulate all dance faculty, choreographers and dancers for their work as creative artists, thinkers, and collaborators. We could not do this without the talents and dedication of all involved and the support of the Council on the Arts and the Arts and Languages Department. We also congratulate our dedicated dance ensemble senior Samantha D’Agostino who is graduating this semester. A brief acknowledgement ceremony for her will take place at the end of Friday’s concert.
Finally, I invite you to witness the embodiment of various colors of hope from the perspectives of our performers and choreographers. May this program provide a deeper appreciation of dance as an art form and a communicative tool that reflects the hope and beauty of life. The Iona University Dance Ensemble is grateful for your continued generous support.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Hannah Park - Director of Iona University Dance Ensemble
Program
Video recordings of today’s performance, including cell phone recordings, are prohibited.

Music: Twinkle Berry by Brent Lewis edited by Dr. Gilliean Lee
Note: This co-created dance film incorporates the movement train structure (inspired by Mitchell Rose’s Exquisite Corps) to explore the physical embodiment of visuals surrounding the space through experimentation with limbs, gestures, and actions. The process involved reflecting on self, connecting with senses, and being attuned to and inspired by the space in which the dance was created/improvised, focusing on its architecture and relating to each individual’s idea of hope. The performance is used as an introduction to each dancer as well as each dancer’s explorations on dialoguing with themselves on the screen. Some compositional ideas incorporated are Elements of Dance related to body manipulation, mirroring, exploration of pathways, exploration of entrance and exits, and varied shape and motion possibilities.
Videography: Dr. Gilliean Lee (with recordings by Elizabeth Riccio)
Choreographer: Dr. Hannah Park in collaboration with the dancers
Performers: Leslie Aguirre, Jezebel Brito, Angelique Byrd, Melissa Chavez, Jaicelynne Chicas, Samantha Colon, Samantha D'Agostino, Kaitlyn Larkin, Aaliyah Morales, Medje Pierrot, Kaylee Pintado, Jidapha Vastola, Nicole Winkelmeyer

Note: Using concerns about environmental sustainability that the dancers discussed through brainstorming and collaboration, the dance explores environmentally sustainable behavior through movement and dance composition processes as the dancers use embodiment for critical reflection and advocacy. Dr. Park is invited to present a paper about the creative process for this piece and its theoretical underpinnings, accompanied by a brief video collage, as a part of Korea Society of Dance’s International Symposium’s Dance in the Anthropocene on Nov. 22nd.
Performers: Dr. Hannah Park, Prof. David G. Lee, Prof. Jessa Rose, Prof. Eilish Henderson
Music: Dynamic by Mike Wall
Note: Similar to “Colors of Hope,” this film, presented as a dance film only (with no live performers), is used as a way to introduce and present the faculty members/choreographers
Choreographer/Performer: Jidapha Vastola
Music: Someone to Die For by Sam Smith
Note: This dance explores a deep longing and hope for finding a special person in life. It investigates a variety of emotions involved throughout the journey of searching for that someone by exploring the details of movement dynamics.
Choreographer/Performer: Samantha D'Agostino
Music: Do Your Thing by Basement Jaxx
Note: The dance explores what dance is and its possibilities for embracing confidence and letting go of inhibitions, radiates boldness through examining dynamics and expressive movement, and also experiments with the relationship with the delicacies of the music in the score’s layered beats and groovy vibe. It emphasizes a deep connection with the music and the dance’s meaning to the performer to communicate the distinctive artistry to the audience.
Choreographers/Performers: Angelique Byrd, Jidapha Vastola
Music: Let the Light In by Lana Del Rey
Note: Expressions of inner struggles and hope for connection and one’s need to reach out are expressed through this duet that highlights the concept of the importance of communication and how the lack of it can have consequences for all involved.
Choreographer: Prof. Eilish Henderson in collaboration with the dancers
Performers: Jeremy Rodriguez and Alivia McCord
Music: Dawn Chorus by Thom Yorke (the track will fade out at around 4 minutes)
Note: The dance explores reflections of time, space, earth and sound that reverberate as the dancers journey through multifaceted reflections of existence. The wind becomes a guide to learn the preciousness of time. Cycles shed light on the passing of each moment. Can you see the beams shine through?

Choreographer/Performer: Dr. Hannah Park (Presented on the screen)
Music: Keep by Frahm
Note: The dance celebrates the somatic aspects of movement exploring internal motions focusing on attuning to the inner fluids.
