IUDE Spring 2025 Concert: Embodied Joy

Director’s Notes

Welcome to Iona University Dance Ensemble’s Spring 2025 season at the Murphy Auditorium! We are delighted that you are joining us to celebrate the virtuosity, versatility, and professionalism of the ensemble members who have dedicated themselves to this production over the past few months. We are thrilled to present works by faculty and student choreographers under the theme “Embodied Joy.” For this semester’s production, the dancers explored joy that range from personal to communal to global, that can inspire us to understand ourselves better, become a more engaged citizen, develop our imagination and our identity. Our main ensemble repertories include a dance choreographed by myself in collaboration with the dancers that explores the meaning of joy as individuals and a community, a jazz dance on a gentle nod to the Great Gatsby and the elation associated with these eccentric parties of the era, a House hip hop dance piece that examines the feeling of joy when you put on headphones in your room to being out and about with your friends, and a Butoh based piece that explores ephemeral thread that cultivates joy. We also showcase few solos that celebrate diverse aspects of joy for each other and the world.

We congratulate all dance faculty, choreographers and dancers for their work as creative artists, thinkers, and collaborators. We could not do this without the talents and dedication of all involved and the support of the Council on the Arts and the Arts and Languages Department. We also congratulate our dedicated dance ensemble seniors Leslie Aguirre and Aaliyah Morales who are graduating this semester. A brief acknowledgement ceremony for the dancers will take place at the end after Friday’s concert. There is a 10–15-minute Q and A session following Thursday’s concert that we invite all to stay and ask any questions that you might have about what you saw.

Finally, I invite you to witness the embodiment of various colors of joy from the perspectives of our performers and choreographers. May this program provide a deeper appreciation of dance as an art form and a communicative tool that reflects the joy and beauty of life. The Iona University Dance Ensemble is grateful for your continued generous support.

Dr. Hannah Park - Director of Iona University Dance Ensemble

Program

Video recordings of today’s performance, including cell phone recordings, are prohibited.

Director: Dr. Hannah Park in collaboration with the dancers
Videographer: Dr. Gilliean Lee
Performers/Choreographers: Leslie Aguirre, Angellique Byrd, Jaicelynne Chicas Samantha Colon, Adriana Cordero, Zayna Fakhouri, Brooke Flannelly, Dallas Green, Kaityln Larkin, Aaliyah Morales, Medjie Pierrot, Ariel Posner, Nicole Valdez, Jidapha Vastola
Music: Fives 45 by London Dance Collective
Note: This co-created dance film incorporates the movement train structure (inspired by Mitchell Rose’s Exquisite Corps) to explore the physical embodiment and reflections of the visuals surrounding the space through experimentation with limbs, gestures, and actions. The process involved reflecting on self, connecting with senses, and being attuned to and inspired by the space in which the dance was created/improvised, focusing on its architecture and relating to each individual’s idea of joy. The performance is used as an introduction to each dancer as well as each dancer’s explorations on dialoguing with themselves on the screen. Some compositional ideas incorporated are Elements of Dance related to body manipulation, mirroring, exploration of pathways, exploration of entrance and exits, and varied shape and motion possibilities.

Choreographer: Dr. Hannah Park in collaboration with the dancers
Performers:Leslie Aguirre, Angellique Byrd, Jaicelynne Chicas Samantha Colon, Adriana Cordero, Zayna Fakhouri, Brooke Flannelly, Dallas Green, Kaityln Larkin, Aaliyah Morales, Medjie Pierrot, Ariel Posner, Jidapha Vastola
Music: Amiss by Michael Wall, Below Zero by DJ Nate, and Hip Thruster by NameBrandSound edited by Dr. Gilliean Lee
Videography: Dr. Gilliean Lee

Note: The dance examines each individual’s as well as group’s meaning of joy through several layers of reflections and movement investigations using embodiment highlighting choreographic elements such as action and response, pathways, formations, entrances and exits, and shape and shape flow.

Performers/Choreographers: Dr. Hannah Park, Prof. David G. Lee, Prof. Eilish Henderson, Prof. Dani H. Bensky
Music: Eights 110 by London Dance Collective
Note: Similar to “Embodied Joy” this film, presented as a dance film only (with no live performers), is used as a way to introduce and present the faculty members/choreographers.

Choreographer: Prof. Dani H. Bensky

Music: Back to Black by The Brian Ferry Orchestra

Performers: Angellique Byrd, Samantha Colon, Brooke Flannelly, Dallas Green, Kaityln Larkin, Medjie Pierrot, Ariel Posner, Nicole Valdez, Jidapha Vastola
Note: Informed loosely by the work of Bob Fosse and Jack Cole, this piece reflects the pull toward the guilty pleasures of the prohibition era in the 20’s and 30’s. A gentle nod to Great Gatsby and the elation associated with these eccentric parties of the era. This piece is about finding joy in the things that continue to draw us back in, even if they might not always be the healthiest.

It is about living in the moment and enjoying extravagance without worrying about what tomorrow will bring.

Choreographer: Prof. Eilish Henderson Guest Performers from FPA240(Intro to World Dance Forms) Class: Clyde Morris, Diana Bernard, Samuel Ferguson

Music: Untitled by Klanglos

Note: This piece is rooted in the notion that a collective energy exists between all of us. Each action has a reaction. Each ripple reverberates long after inception. How does this connectivity bring us together? How does this ephemeral thread cultivate joy?

Choreographer/Performer: Jidapha Vastola

Music: Crystalize by Lindsey Sterling

Note: This dance explores various meanings of silence that cultivates inner joty using weight as a metaphor investigating it through various layers of gestural studies integrating compositional tools such as positionings, shape and shape flow, pathways, and movement sequencing and phrasing.

The solo student choreographic project mentored by Dr. Park was recently presented as a part of student performance showcase at the American College Dance Association Northeast Conference at Rutgers University on March 13th.

Choreographer/Performer: Ariel Posner
Music: hip-hop, Rihanna-lemonade (clean version)

Note: Using street hip hop movement vocabularies and embracing the idea of individual expression and empowerment highlighted in hip hop, the dance examines expressions of having positive outlook even when things can be challenging in life. The dance also explores connecting with the specifics of the musical contents within the music as one let loose and let the music move and uplift you.

Choreographer/Performer: Dr. Hannah Park

Music: Waende by Sabstian Selke, Daniel Selke, Ceeys
Note: Through the lens of somatics, the dance explores abbs and flow of Joy with focus on breath initiation and it radiating throughout the body highlighting the interplay with spine, limbs and gestures.

Choreographer: Prof. David Cartahena Lee in collaboration with the dancers

Performers: Leslie Aguirre, Angellique Byrd, Jaicelynne Chicas, Samantha Colon, Adriana Cordero, Zayna Fakhouri, Brooke Flannelly, Dallas Green, Kaityln Larkin, Aaliyah Morales, Medjie Pierrot, Ariel Posner, Nicole Valdez, Jidapha Vastola

Music: all I want is the bass by Moussue T.

Note: House was born out of the ashes of disco, on the dance floors of Chicago and New York by marginalized black, brown, and queer safe communities. It’s a dance about who you are, and it’s a culture of joy and community. This dance explores the feeling of joy when you put on headphones in your room to being out and about with your friends!
