Iona University Alumnus Named Executive Director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital
Iona University alumnus Scott Edelman ’02, ’07MBA, CPA, CFE, FHFMA has been appointed executive director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. Edelman's journey from Iona to leading one of the nation's top 50 rehabilitation hospitals, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report, is a testament to his dedication and the values instilled in him during his time at Iona.
Edelman earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2002 and his MBA in finance in 2007 from Iona. Reflecting on his time at the University, Edelman credits Iona with preparing him for the myriad presentations and professional challenges he has faced throughout his 35-year healthcare career.
"In my opinion, leaders must be visible," Edelman said. "It’s important to spend time out in the halls. I like to speak genuinely with patients, caregivers, and employees, and ensure they feel at home while at Burke."
Edelman's leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in his experiences at Iona, where he formed close connections with a core group of classmates. This support network, along with mentorship from his professors, played a crucial role in his success.
When he faced challenges studying for the CPA exam, for instance, a former professor allowed him to audit a class, sharpening his understanding and advancing his skills.
"Their mentorship helped shape me into the professional I am today and influenced my decision to serve as an adjunct professor at Iona for some time," Edelman recalls.
He continues to give back through education as an adjunct professor in the SUNY MBA program and has held teaching positions at Iona University and LIU Hudson.
Edelman's professional journey at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital led to senior leadership roles, serving as interim executive director and senior vice president and chief financial officer before his recent promotion to executive director.
"I always tell people: don’t just take up space. Showing up is only 50 percent of the battle. Listening and taking notes is the first step. Going home and spending time on that topic and becoming a subject matter expert is important. You get what you put into anything,” he said.
Edelman's journey from Iona University to leading Burke Rehabilitation Hospital exemplifies the impact of education, mentorship, and dedication. His story inspires Iona students to strive for excellence and make meaningful contributions to their fields and communities.
