Why Study Esports at Iona?

A Comprehensive Overview 

Students in this minor gain a comprehensive overview of the Esports industry. Covering its history, culture, economics and broadcasting applications, students will be able to leverage the past and present states of Esports to ideate on what the future holds for this fast-growing field.

The Technology Behind Esports

All students participate in a Game Development class, giving them valuable insight into how games are produced, from inception to completion. Students utilize a professional game engine and other software tools while developing critical thinking, problem solving and solution design skills.

Management, Ethics and Other Important Issues

In this interdisciplinary minor, students learn about legal issues, ethics, team management, and governance of competitions. Through class discussions, students also explore global and social issues arising from gaming culture. Students focus on developing effective oral and written communication skills through creative content developed in the discipline of media and strategic communication.

Drone Soccer

The Esports minor includes a segment on Drone Soccer, exploring its role within Esports, where teams operate drones in a competitive setting aiming to develop winning strategies in aerial competitions.

By examining these areas, students enhance life skills such as strategic thinking, self-confidence, communication and teamwork, which are essential both within and beyond the realm of Esports.

Esports (Minor) Program Highlights

Open to All Majors

This interdisciplinary minor is open to students from any major. Covering a range of academic areas including computer science, sociology, business and beyond, students are able to both explore and expand their interests. 

Develop In-Demand Skills

This minor fosters in-demand skills that can be applied across a wide variety of industries including oral and written communication, strategic thinking, problem solving and teamwork.

Opportunities to Compete

Students taking the Esports Minor are also encouraged to explore Iona's Esports Club where they will have the opportunity to compete against other MAAC schools in games such as League of Legends, Fortnite and Mario Kart, to name but a few.
