History and Adolescent Education (BA/MST)
Want to Be a High School History Teacher?
Combine your love of history with your passion to teach with our accelerated program where you will graduate classroom-ready. Share your knowledge with young minds and let history make a difference in your future and theirs!
Why Study History and Adolescent Education at Iona?
In just five years — instead of the six it would typically take — you’ll earn a BA in History, an MST in Adolescent Education, as well as your New York State Initial teaching certification.
Our program will develop your joy in lifelong learning, so you can pass that joy onto students. You will be able to take advantage of our close proximity to New York City – rich with history, stories, and opportunities you can share with your classroom.
You will work closely with dedicated faculty who have first-hand experience as historians, researchers, teachers, principals, and school superintendents. They will become your mentors, field placement supervisors, career advisers and advocates as they help you move successfully from our campus to a classroom of your own.
What You'll Learn
You will study historical developments and their impact on societies and the world, while developing an awareness of global history and an appreciation for the factors which have shaped our world.
You will learn to use storytelling and analysis to communicate historical events, and you will gain an understanding of how students learn, so that you can engage and impact students in grades 7-12.
You will master the ability to question confidently, research diligently, examine thoroughly, communicate clearly, problem-solve creatively and plan efficiently – all skills that will make you an effective and successful teacher.
