Want to Be a High School Math Teacher?

When young people say they don’t like math, it’s often because of the way they’ve been taught. You can have a significant impact on attitudes about math and on young students' lives with this dual degree program.

Mathematics teachers are in very high demand, and in just five years you can be sharing your enthusiasm for numbers and problem-solving in a classroom of your own!

Why Study Mathematics and Adolescent Education at Iona?

In just five years — instead of the six it would typically take — you’ll earn a BA or BS in Mathematics, an MST in Adolescent Education, as well as your New York State Initial teaching certification.

You will learn from faculty who are mathematicians and educators and will share experience bringing innovative approaches to math and teaching. They will become your mentors, field placement supervisors, career advisers and advocates as they help you move successfully from our campus to your own classroom!

Our MST program boasts a highly successful EDTPA (NYS videotaped teacher portfolio exam) pass rate – proof of the high-quality teacher preparation you will receive!

What You'll Learn

In the BA/BS Mathematics program, you will gain a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques in a math curriculum that emphasizes three major areas: algebra, analysis and applied mathematics.

Our MST program will provide you with a crucial understanding of how students learn, and will develop your skills in sharing your mathematical knowledge with students in grades 7-12.
