With over four decades in the nursing profession, Dr. Monica Diamond-Caravella has worked in several arenas of healthcare, most notably in two New York City Comprehensive Cancer Centers - both in the acute in-hospital and outpatient settings. The latter part of her career was devoted to community-based nursing and, more recently, she pivoted to nursing education. Dr. Diamond-Caravella previously served as the Academic Coordinator (Assistant Chairperson) for Farmingdale State College's Department of Nursing. In that role she cowrote the department's accreditation self-study, ensured student and faculty compliance with established policies and streamlined procedures to ensure an efficient, effective and organized nursing department. She has expertise in teaching community/public health nursing, senior level capstone experiences, NCLEX-RN prep, and nursing leadership courses with a focus on quality improvement She further enjoys teaching nutrition, mental health nursing and foundational clinical concepts in nursing. Her long-term association with the American Lung Association prompted the creation of a sustainable academic practice partnership within a service-learning framework that greatly enhanced clinical experiences for nursing students taking community health nursing. Building collaborative alliances with nurse educators from other schools of nursing added breadth and strength to a concerted effort to address the unusually high asthma burden in targeted high needs communities across Long Island and in New York State. This unique team of educators and public health professionals became a model partnership that blended academia with clinical practice with the ultimate goal of population health improvement. The partnership was awarded the American Association of College's of Nursing Exemplary Academic-Practice Award in August 2020. Dr. Diamond-Caravella is a nationally certified asthma educator since 2012 and remains active with the American Lung Association. Research interests of Dr. Diamond-Caravella continue to highlight her passion for community/public health, the creation of academic-public health partnerships and their potential for improving population-based outcomes. Dr. Diamond-Caravella serves as a peer reviewer for the journal, Public Health Nursing, is a long-term inducted member of Sigma Theta Tau International and is a founding member of the Long Island/Queens Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society.
