Kate Branson Gmuer teaches courses in introductory and advanced adolescent literacy and special education. Her research focuses on preservice teacher education program content and faculty instructional methods, specifically looking at language and literacy instruction, dyslexia and learning disabilities, and special education law and policy at the federal, state, and local levels. Her dissertation developed a theory of ‘Masking Dyslexia,’ a term coined by Sally L. Smith, her graduate professor and Founder of The Lab School of Washington (D.C). Before entering academia, she was a k-12 special education teacher, a college director of disability services/instructor, and an associate producer at WJLA-TV (ABC News affiliate) in Washington, D.C. Kate is committed to ensuring her preservice education students are “rethinking disability” to dismantle ableism in our school systems, always finding creativity in their students using cross-disciplinary content and infusing the arts.
