New Rochelle and Bronxville, N.Y. – Iona University President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., has been named as one of the region’s most influential figures in City & State’s Hudson Valley Power 100. This year’s inaugural list identifies the “movers and shakers” from Westchester County to Ulster County, N.Y.

Writing about Carey’s leadership since taking the helm of Iona in 2019, the editors note: “Iona University has undergone a transformation under Seamus Carey’s direction.”

The magazine highlights how Carey managed the acquisition of Iona’s new 28-acre campus in Bronxville in 2021, where he also spearheaded the creation of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences. In addition, Carey also oversaw the launch of Iona’s new campus in Ireland this year. These developments build upon Iona’s transition from a college to a university, which better reflects Iona’s growth and academic excellence.

Since 2019, new student enrollment is up over 40 percent at Iona. This fall, the University welcomed its largest and most academically impressive class in over 20 years.

“Thank you to City & State for this recognition and congratulations to all of the fellow Gaels on the list,” Carey said. “It is rewarding to be acknowledged among both my colleagues in higher education as well as many of the state’s most influential leaders in business, politics, health care and nonprofit work.”
