Together, Gaels Go Further: Reflections on the Impact of Iona University’s Mentoring Experience

Annika Ziels ’24, a mentee in the Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program, cites the program as “one of the most valuable offerings at Iona.”

Mentorship

Now in its third year, the Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program initiative connects students with successful alumni to help prepare them for their careers after graduation. In a recent survey, 97 percent of students who participated in the program this semester indicated they would recommend the experience to a peer. The following testimonial perfectly captures why Gaels Go Further Mentoring is uniquely impactful for Iona students and alumni alike.

I decided to enroll in the Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program after my boss in the Iona Marketing & Communications Office encouraged me to do so. I had little prior knowledge of what the course was about, however I trusted that my boss’s glowing reviews about the course were accurate. I was so pleased to find out that all the incredible things she claimed about the class were true and my expectations were far exceeded. The Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program has become one of the best things I have involved myself in at Iona.

I am a double major in public relations and arts leadership with a minor in writing, which is a unique combination of concentrations. However, Professor Nielsen went above and beyond to ensure I was paired with a mentor whose career really identified with my interests and aspirations.

My mentor, Anjelica Rosa ’08, and I instantly clicked. Her work with programming at Nickelodeon, AMC and MTV was so exciting for me to learn about and gave me such insight into the industry I want to be a part of. She went out of her way to meet in person and answer all my questions no matter how silly they seemed to me. Not only did Anjelica provide incredible conversation and connection herself, but she also introduced me to many friends in the industry who had different titles than her so I could receive as much insight as possible. I am beyond thankful for the mentorship that Anjelica provided and continues to provide for me.

In addition to the relationships that Gaels Go Further provides, the one-credit course also helped in perfecting my resume, cover letters, executing and planning personal goals for my future and taught life skills that I will carry with me long after graduation. I would recommend the program to any student or alum who is even considering getting involved.

It is one of the most valuable offerings Iona has and I am proud to have been a part of it. I only wish I could take the course again!

This year I had the privilege to participate as a mentor in the Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program.  I was paired with Annika Ziels, a public relations major, who was engaged, eager to learn and prepared with insightful questions.  I couldn’t have asked for a better mentee!

We met several times, both in person and virtually, over the course of the semester.  We had conversations about the media industry, her career aspirations and journey so far, and wisdoms I’ve learned through my career such as the importance of networking, taking advantage of informationals, having an open mind and much more. I also introduced her to a few colleagues in the TV and Broadway industry, so she can learn more about other departments and career fields that align with her interests.

The program has been such a rewarding experience.  Being able to offer guidance I wish I had when I started my career and help such a personable and bright student like Annika, has been a gratifying experience. I highly recommend alumni participate in this program to help guide our fellow Gaels into future rising leaders.
