My Iona

What is Immersion?

Immersion is an opportunity to learn from the lived experiences of people in different communities and serve their needs. Participants are not ‘missionaries’ and there is no faith requirement. All full-time students are welcome to apply. All that is asked of participants is to make an effort to live out the values of presence, compassion, and liberation, as inspired by Iona’s Founder Blessed Edmund Rice. Also, to have an open heart and mind!

What you can expect from the process

Pre-Immersion

Meet weekly for team bonding, reflection, and pre-departure education about the community partner, immersion location, local history and culture.

Immersion

Travel to your site and serve while building supportive relationships with people in the community and developing an understanding of the issues they face.

Post-Immersion

After returning, members are challenged to continue serving in the local community and to find ways of sharing what they have learned and experienced with others.

Immersion is a serious commitment. Ask yourself: Can I commit to the weekly team meetings? Am I prepared if unforeseen personal expenses arise? Do I enjoy serving others and being on a team?
