Why did you decide to attend Iona?
I committed to Iona to play soccer and I loved the dorms as well as the variety of food in the dining halls and off-campus restaurants. I also loved the family-oriented culture and the alumni network that you get to be a part of as a Gael. Iona’s location also played a part, being only a 30-minute train ride to Grand Central, plus I was also still close to home and family.
What influenced you selecting your LaPenta School of Business major?
I want a fulfilling career involving making people happy and sharing honest opinions. With that vision in mind, I chose finance and marketing as a double major to work one-on-one with clients and to present strategies and ideas to large teams.
Have you completed (or are currently completing) an internship? If so, what organization and location?
I am currently working part-time on the #1 mandated lead arranger team in Manhattan with a financial firm called Equitable Advisors. I work with financial planners as they communicate to their clients. I do analytical work involving modeling and analyzing financial information obtained from clients to make projections and determine strategies, products and services to help clients meet their financial objectives. For example, retirement, ETFs, real estate purchases, mutual funds, or structured investment products.
What did/do you enjoy most about your internship?
One thing I enjoy most about my job is the fast-paced and energetic culture. I love working with clients and providing them with financial guidance and tailored strategies for their needs.
What do you feel is the most distinctive advantage gained from your Iona LaPenta School of Business experience?
The most distinct advantage I’ve gained from the LaPenta School of Business is that we’re given the tools we need to succeed in today’s world. From class discussions focused on current events to real-world client scenarios and being able to seek help from professors about the rapidly changing world. The LaPenta School of Business provides us with guest speakers multiple times a week ranging from how to handle your money, sharpening your resume, and giving opportunities to get in front of a big-time CEO for a conversation. The Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program gave me access to a network of amazing alumni and a fantastic mentor who helps me with interviews, business ideas and industry terms when speaking to professionals. Shout-out Chris!
What LaPenta School of Business faculty or staff member has made a positive impact on your future? Why?
Definitely Eric Hamerman, because he took the time to really get to know me outside of the classroom. He is ALWAYS ready to give advice, helps you think outside the box, and replies to all my emails with step-by-step procedures within minutes. Bret Sanner and Alison Munsch are also fantastic professors who brought guest speakers covering what they look for in potential hires and the job search process. I’ve gained experience in working with real businesses and companies through class assignments with them. Roberto Cruz is another favorite as he has the most relevant lectures regarding current events and future economic trends.
