AI@Iona

MEETING THE AI MOMENT

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence as a force in all sectors of commerce and culture demands that higher education take a close look at the challenges and opportunities it presents across all disciplines.

This is a challenge Iona gladly accepts. We do not look at AI as an existential threat, but as a welcome opportunity to deepen and extend the teaching and learning that are core to our mission. AI@Iona, an initiative of the Gabelli Center for Teaching & Learning, supports our institutional response to this historical development.

Explore AI@Iona’s resources to find tools and events that place both theory and practice in thoughtful educational and ethical contexts.

Success is going to come from getting experts to use these systems and share what they learn.

- Ethan Mollick, author of Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI

AI is in the news - and on campus.

From AI workshops to numerous faculty-led integrations of AI tools, AI@Iona is taking root across campus and in classrooms.

Amy Stackhouse quote: 'I decided that the way I was going to handle the situation was by having open discussions with my students about AI, but also allow them to explore what AI can and can't do well right now.'

We need to be cognizant that our students are already in a world in which the influence of AI is everywhere, whether they know it or not. And, as so many of our alumni are telling us, these tools are becoming more and more prominent in the workplace in every industry. So it’s incumbent on us to give guidelines and orientation to students about the limitations of AI as well as its potential strengths. That involves considerations not only of utility and efficacy, but of ethics and meaning—the values that promote human flourishing across a lifetime.

What has been most encouraging is that many people who initially found AI threatening, or were skeptical of its utility, have been surprised and energized by the fresh perspectives they are discovering by working with AI tools. AI@Iona aims to spread that energy to foster campuswide attention to the possibilities of AI.
