Why Study Healthcare Communication?

Communication is key to almost all professions. This is especially true when working in an area where compassion, empathy and honesty are needed in the communication of sensitive health information. With an expertise in healthcare communication, you will be prepared to work with other healthcare professionals to speak with patients/clients in a manner that is compassionate and caring.

Why Study Healthcare Communication at Iona?

Foster Open Communication

In academic and professional settings, it is only natural that health-related conversations consist of scientific terms and nomenclature. However, it is necessary to consider that patients and clients may not be equipped with the same vocabulary, and that a different approach is needed. This minor provides the tools to communicate in a professional manner with compassion, empathy and clarity, and in the process, foster open communication between providers and patients/clients.

Explore Intercultural Communication, Small Group Techniques and more

The two required courses for this minor provide students with a foundation of communication skills needed for future healthcare professionals. From there, students choose three additional courses depending on their interests. Topics include Intercultural Communication, Small Group Communication Techniques and more.
