Iona University Certification for Teaching Online

Iona University has developed a certification for instructors who are teaching online courses. This certification is intended to enhance the quality and consistency of online and hybrid courses. The program consists of workshops on online teaching tools, applying online learning principles to course development, and evaluating the instructor's online course design.

Workshop Series

  1. Optimizing Your Blackboard Site: This workshop introduces faculty to universal design principles for online learning and cover organizing course content in OneDrive and using Blackboard features to add content, modify the navigation menu, and use the Grade Center.
  2. Curating Online Course Content: This workshop covers working with various online media, including integrated online textbooks, library resources, and open internet sources, to create rich, accessible learning environments and promote student information literacy.
  3. Evaluating Online Learning & Deterring Plagiarism: This workshop covers creating discussions, assignments, and tests while deterring traditional and AI-assisted plagiarism. Remote exam proctoring will be covered, and academic integrity resources will be highlighted.
  4. Zoom Instructional Tools: Instructors will learn to use Zoom for synchronous remote learning and recording lectures. Topics covered include whiteboards, surveys, chat-integrated class discussions, and uploading and linking to YouTube videos.

Instructional Design

Following the workshop sequence, instructors will build course sites on the Blackboard system designed following best practices for online learning. Instructors will be supported by consultation with Instructional Technologists and Media Specialists.

Course Site Evaluation & Certification

Faculty Services staff evaluate instructor-created course sites for design quality. Factors considered are content organization, communication effectiveness, and student learning assessment.

Instructors will be awarded a certificate after completing the full sequence of workshops.
