Grievance Procedures

Students whose request for a specific accommodation1 through the Accessibility Services Office has been denied, may file a complaint by completing the Appeals Process outlined below.

The Appeals Process is as follows:

  1. Within 15 (working) days of being informed that the accommodation request1 has been denied or upon realizing that the accommodation is not effective, file a request for reconsideration to the Director of Accessibility Services, Daneshea Palmer at Dpalmer@Iona.edu. All original documentation, including the original request, will be reviewed for reconsideration.
  2. If a student is dissatisfied with the outcome of the request for reconsideration, the student may submit a formal appeal. The appeal should identify the specific accommodations requested and denied, a statement regarding why the accommodation is reasonable and necessary, and any new relevant supporting documentation from a licensed medical or mental health professional.
  3. Within 15 (working) days of receiving an appeal2, the Director of Accessibility Services will:
    1. Request a follow-up meeting with the student to discuss the accommodation request denial and review newly submitted documentation.
    2. Render decision within five (5) working days from the follow-up meeting.

If a student is still dissatisfied with the outcome of the appeal, the student may submit a formal appeal to the Provost. Appeals to the Provost must be submitted by email to Tmulligan@iona.edu within 15 (working) days of receiving the decision from the Director of Accessibility Services. The Provost or the Provost’s designee may request a follow-up meeting with the student as a part of the decision-making process. The Provost or the Provost’s designee will issue a written decision on the appeal within 15 (working) days or as soon thereafter as practical. The determination is final and cannot be appealed within the University.
