My Iona

Special Housing Accommodations

Iona University provides reasonable housing accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended in 2008, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1978, and the Fair Housing Act to ensure equal access and enjoyment of all Residential Life programs, activities, and facilities. The University is committed to ensuring equal access and fostering an inclusive environment which does not discriminate against persons with disabilities. This policy derives from the University's commitment to non-discrimination for all persons, access to facilities, student programs, activities, and services.

The Accessibility Services Office (ASO) is responsible for evaluating requests from students with disabilities who qualify for reasonable housing accommodations in the residence hall. In evaluating the request, the ASO staff will determine whether the requested accommodation is necessary and reasonable.

The learning environment and residential living are central to the Iona University experience. It should be noted that living within the community and learning to share space and be considerate of others is part of that learning experience. Therefore, requests for special housing accommodations (as an ADA, Section 504, Fair Housing accommodation) based on a student’s preference or desire for “privacy” and “quiet space” rather than need, or for a particular type of living environment/location are considered exceptions to this policy and will not be honored. For example, a student diagnosed with ADHD or a student having difficulties with roommates who is seeking a single room to serve as a distraction-free, undisturbed place to study, concentrate, etc., represents a preference, but not a necessity.

To request reasonable housing accommodations, log into your Single Sign-on (myiona.iona.edu). Click PeopleSoft > Self Service > Electronic Forms > Accessibility Services Forms > Petition for Reasonable Housing Accommodations.

The process may take several weeks, depending on the nature of the disability, the need for documentation, and the requested accommodations.

More than one meeting may be required if additional documentation is needed.
