Land Acknowledgement Statement

Iona University’s Land Statement has been updated by the Committee on Environmental Sustainability. All campus constituents are encouraged to voluntarily use the statement at events and in your email signature, to call attention to the history of the space we occupy.

Full Statement

Iona University acknowledges that Indigenous peoples and nations, including the Munsee Lenape people within the greater Lenapehoking territory, have stewarded through generations the lands and waterways of what is now Westchester County, where Iona University is located. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land. In the tradition of the Christian Brothers, Iona University uses education as a force for overcoming injustice and marginalization by promoting honor, dignity, and respect for all people.

Abbreviated Statement for Use Before Events

The land on which we are gathered is part of the ancestral homeland and traditional territory of the Munsee-speaking Lenape people. We pay respect to Lenape peoples past, present and future and their continuing presence in the homeland and throughout the Lenape diaspora.
