My Iona

Interprofessional Education (IPE) Field Fellowship Opportunities

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is the practice of learning about, from and with each other. Generally involving students from at least two different disciplines, the goal of IPE is always to collaborate together to improve outcomes.

The following programs participate in IPE at Iona University:

  • Communication Science & Disorders (Graduate Program)
  • Education
  • Marriage & Family Therapy
  • Mental Health Counseling
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • School Psychology
  • Social Work

Students in the Interprofessional Education programming at Iona can participate in a hands-on experience called the IPE community-based field fellowships. Students from participating IPE disciplines work together at a specific site to learn about, from and with each other to help improve the care of a patient or client.

What are IPE Community Based Fellowships?

Community based fellowships are structured opportunities at various sites in organizations aligned with Iona University that provide students the opportunity to use information and knowledge and put theory into practice. Participating students, who have completed their first semester IPE learning module, will bring discipline specific knowledge along with newly acquired knowledge of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (known as IPEC) and its four Core competencies:

  1. Values and Ethics
  2. Roles and Responsibilities
  3. Interprofessional Communication
  4. Teamwork and Team-Based Care

Students will be part of an interdisciplinary team involved in a community-based fellowship. Fellowships provide hands-on, structured opportunities to test out and learn the dynamics of interprofessional collaborative practice while working with a trained faculty facilitator.

WHY WOULD A STUDENT CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE IN A FELLOWSHIP?

In today’s workforce, one of the most important skills employers seek is knowing how to engage with and work collaboratively as part of a team. Participating in community-based IPE fellowships is an opportunity to engage in activities and projects with students from several disciplines within the IPE program. As students gain knowledge of the theories and principles guiding interprofessional education and collaboration in their courses, fellowships provide hands-on experience guided by a trained faculty or site-based facilitator. Students who complete an experiential component such as the IPE community-based fellowship will have a greater level of understanding in interprofessional education/collaboration and gain important skills for their future careers.

HOW ARE FELLOWSHIPS STRUCTURED?

Field fellowships range in length from 4–10 weeks during the academic semesters with 2-3 hours of work/week. Some fellowships require students to attend off-site sessions at community-based locations, others are virtual, and some are a combination of in-person and virtual sessions.
Interdisciplinary teams will work together under trained faculty or a community-based site facilitator. The facilitator will work to arrange meeting times, weekly work/assignment expectations, and timeframes for activities and paperwork deadlines.

When selecting fellowships, students should closely review the specific information to ensure they have completed the educational requirements, are available during the listed meeting times, and can attend all sessions whether in-person or virtual, as each fellowship has a unique set of requirements. Please refer to the specific fellowship information page to ascertain the level of education required for participation in each fellowship.

WHO IS INVOLVED WITH FELLOWSHIPS?

Each fellowship will consist of student fellows from the Iona University IPE participating programs and either a trained IPE faculty or a community-based site facilitator.

Iona University has over 30 faculty members who have undergone training certified by the Texas IPE Consortium for IPE facilitation. Facilitators work to guide students through the fellowship experience adhering to the IPEC 4 Core Competencies. Facilitators guide the team of students to collaboratively interact with one another rather than being student observers.

Students who wish to participate in fellowships will need to at least complete the introductory IPE learning modules in their first year of their program to obtain a level of understanding of interprofessional education/collaboration and the IPEC 4 Core Competencies.

To assure that all students in the IPE Program have an opportunity to participate in fellowships, fellowship enrollment will be limited to 2 fellowship experiences per student. Students are not eligible to apply for a second semester of participation in the same fellowship unless specifically stated. Participating fellows must uphold the IPEC 4 core competencies throughout their fellowship experience and behave professionally.
