Sherquan Dailey '25 Plans to Take Iona’s Black Student Union to the Next Level
No dream is too big or out of reach for Sherquan Dailey ’25. A political science major, he hopes to use lessons learned inside and outside the classroom at Iona to make a difference in the world by opening his own environmental or family law firm.
Born in the Commonwealth of Dominica and raised in New York, Sherquan has familiarized himself with diverse experiences, perspectives and people his whole life. In fact, his go-getting nature is drawn from those closest to him.
“I’ve been surrounded by powerful Black men and women in law, medicine, government agencies, and more my whole life,” he said. “They are my biggest role models. Their accomplishments have reinforced the fact that my ambitions are not too big.”
Sherquan brought that same ambitious spirit to Iona, where he is the events coordinator for the Black Student Union (BSU).
“As the Honors Program representative for the class of 2025, I wanted network and communicate with more people of color on campus,” he said. “It started out as advocating for diverse experiences inside and outside of the Honors Program. Then, Eileen Exama ’22, the former BSU vice president, scouted me for the e-board. She saw the work I was doing and thought that my goals would tie in perfectly with the agenda of BSU.”
When it comes to the success of BSU and its members, Sherquan says that networking is key.
“The access to networking with alumni is paramount to an organization like BSU,” he said. “The alumni that founded our organization are working in top corporate positions, court systems, senators’ offices, stadiums, and more. My goal is to make sure that the connections between alumni and current BSU members is preserved because opportunities reside in these relationships. We function on the principle that we can rely on one another regardless of space and time.”
