Understanding how the accounting club is viewed at higher education institutions is crucial to the success of applicants during the job application process. However, there has been little research on whether and how academic club membership benefits applicants. To address this, I conducted a qualitative theme analysis across a series of interviews with recruiters and managers at public accounting firms—Study 1. I found that transferrable skills are more closely associated with executive board members than general members. This is because executive board members are viewed as having much greater opportunities to gain transferrable skills through the duties and responsibilities of running an academic club at a higher education institution, while general members are not bound to such responsibilities. I quantitively tested the implication of Study 1 in an additional experiment—Study 2. I found that individuals associated a larger degree of transferrable skills and a higher likelihood of being interviewed with executive board members than with general board members. The data also suggested that general members do not benefit from club membership, because they are viewed as having the same amount of transferrable skills as non-members. These findings further suggested that undergraduates and higher education institutions are misallocating resources to extracurriculars when only executive board members benefit.

The University Innovation Fellowship is a global entrepreneurship program which empowers students to be leaders and change makers on their campus and beyond. This year, the 2020-21 Iona Cohort is in the process of prototyping a service that delivers information to the message service of the Iona Community so they can know about events and activities happening on campus. Through the platforms “Remind” and “Airtable”, the Iona UIF Cohort attempt to create one central location for students to get the events and activities they want to be a part of sent straight to their phones.

Social enterprises are organizations that combat societal issues using revenue-generating strategies. Globally, the number of social enterprises has grown substantially in recent years. However, despite their potential as a tool for human and community development, public awareness about their work is limited. In an effort to address this issue, our research collects information on the diversity of social enterprise models and the innovative funding opportunities that finance them around the world. Using this information, we have developed a portfolio of social enterprise case studies that outline factors such as: what motivates owners to develop social enterprises, their desired social impact, and how they generate revenue that advances their social mission. This portfolio may be used for teaching, research, and practice that aims to illustrate how social enterprises strive to advance human and community development.
