Getting Help for a Friend

We all go through tough times, and people help us through them. It can be challenging to know what to do if you are worried about someone. Talking to someone is often the first step when you want to check in. This way, you can find out what is troubling them and what you can do to help!

WHEN TO CHECK IN

No two people behave the same way when unwell. You may notice changes in their behavior or mood if you know the person well. Some changes to look out for include:

  • Sleeping (too much or too little)

  • Eating (too much or too little)

  • Not keeping up with responsibilities

  • Changes in social interaction (disinterest, hostility)

  • Increased substance use

  • Relationship changes

  • Overt signs of distress

  • Mood fluctuation

  • Self-injury

  • Thoughts of suicide

You do not have to handle this alone, nor should you. Tell someone who is in a position of authority and they can provide the fastest response.
