Spring 2025 London, Zurich, and Munich: Course Overview

FIN 491-A introduces business students to the financial operations and practices of companies and financial institutions across multiple countries, England, Switzerland, and Germany.

Course Description

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of financial aspect of businesses in three unique European cases: England, Switzerland, and Germany. Despite England's former EU membership, it chose not to adopt the Euro and subsequently exited the union, leading to significant financial repercussions analyzed in this course. Similarly, Switzerland, while outside the EU, enjoys comparable benefits to EU nations despite not using the Euro. The investigation focuses on understanding the financial disparities among these countries, particularly in comparison to EU members like Germany, which have embraced the Euro. Through examining the financial operations of companies in England, Switzerland, and Germany, including borrowing, lending, and interactions with financial institutions and markets, students gain insight into the impact of differing political circumstances on financial landscapes.

Additionally, the course broadens its perspective by studying US companies, offering an independent viewpoint. By comparing their financial approaches to those in England, Switzerland, and Germany, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how a country's political relations influence its business sector, financial markets, and institutions.
